I’m unhappy with my smile, but I’m not sure whether the problem is my teeth, lips, or jaw. I have to force a smile to show my upper teeth. I also have jaw pain and wear a night guard. My mouth feels more comfortable when I wear it, and it seems to support my lips better. It also makes my upper teeth more visible.
In cold weather, my jaw feels tight, and words with P and T sounds are difficult to pronounce. Would veneers help with my smile? Thanks. Tabitha from Toledo, OH
Tabitha,
It’s good you’re seeking advice before beginning treatment. Your concerns go beyond your smile’s appearance, and choosing the right dentist is essential.
Based on your description of your symptoms, you may have a collapsed bite along with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems. However, you need an exam for an accurate diagnosis and to discuss your treatment options.
Can Veneers Correct a Collapsed Bite?
Veneers alone can’t correct a collapsed bite. If your bite has collapsed, you may need treatment to restore its height while addressing your jaw pain and other symptoms.
Crowns may be an option, but changing your bite requires careful planning. We recommend consulting a dentist with advanced training in full-mouth reconstruction.
How Should a Dentist Restore Your Bite?

A dentist should test bite changes with reversible treatment before placing permanent restorations. This allows you and your dentist to evaluate the results and adjust without committing to permanent changes.
Before proceeding with crowns or other restorations, the temporary restorations should achieve several goals:
- Relieve your jaw pain and discomfort
- Improve your smile and allow your upper teeth to show naturally
- Support comfortable, normal speech
- Establish a comfortable, stable bite
After the provisional treatment meets these goals, your dentist can design permanent restorations.
How Can You Find a Qualified Dentist?
Only a relatively small number of dentists have extensive training in complex bite reconstruction. Several respected U.S. institutions offer advanced education in this field, including:
- The L.D. Pankey Institute in Florida
- The Dawson Academy in Florida
- The Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies in Nevada
Depending on the availability of dentists with experience in complex bite reconstruction, you may need to travel to a nearby town, but finding someone with the right experience is worth the effort.
