Last August I got porcelain veneers, and I already noticed staining in the spaces between my teeth. Although I smoke, I thought porcelain veneers didn’t stain very easily.
Should I have my cosmetic dentist check for defects in the veneers? I should probably address the problem now if the staining is likely to get worse. – Thanks. Evania from FL
Evania,

Porcelain veneer
Porcelain is very resistant to staining when its glazed surface is intact. Although smoking can cause surface stains, porcelain generally holds its color well. Porcelain can become more vulnerable to staining under certain circumstances. An abrasive polishing method such as a Prophy-Jet or an acidulated fluoride treatment used during a dental hygiene appointment can damage the glaze. However, that would typically cause staining over the porcelain surface rather than only between the teeth.
What Could Cause Staining Between the Teeth?
The stain may be collecting along the margins where the veneers meet your natural teeth. That area can include a small amount of bonding composite, which can pick up stain more readily than glazed porcelain.
There are several things a cosmetic dentist should check:
- Whether there is exposed bonding composite that needs polishing
- Whether the veneer margins are smooth and properly sealed
- Whether there is a gap between the porcelain and tooth
A gap could require more attention. However, exposed or slightly rough bonding composite may be easier to correct. The area may need careful re-polishing.
Ask Your Cosmetic Dentist to Examine Your Veneers
We recommend returning to the cosmetic dentist who placed them. Veneers require specific polishing techniques and materials to avoid damaging the porcelain while smoothing the bonding material around the margins.
The margins were most likely polished when your veneers were bonded, but these areas require additional maintenance over time. We consider this routine veneer maintenance, so you may need to pay for the visit. Because you smoke, staining that might be barely noticeable in another patient could become visible sooner or appear darker.
