I received four silver fillings about a month ago. A week later, I noticed a rash on my face, neck, and chest. Could I really be allergic to the fillings, or do you think that both just happened around the same time by chance? Should I see another dentist right away for a second opinion? Thank you. Harley,
Thank you for your questions.
Did Your Tooth Fillings Cause a Rash?
It is possible to have an allergic reaction to the mercury or another metal contained in amalgam (silver) fillings. Any material used in the body poses a risk of allergic reaction. Still, the American Dental Association says it is rare to have an allergic reaction to the amalgam fillings; fewer than one percent of cases report a reaction. If you are allergic to the fillings, you may also notice redness, itching, or inflammation in your gum tissue.
Does your family have a history of metal allergies? Skin rashes and itching are symptoms of an allergy, but it is best to get tested by an allergist to determine the cause of your rash. If you are allergic to amalgam fillings or no longer want them, you can get them replaced by a cosmetic dentist who only uses tooth-colored composite fillings.
Although you may not need to see another dentist immediately, you should schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor or an allergist.
