It’s important to tell your oral surgeon that you’re on methadone, including how much and how often you take it. This allows them to adjust sedation appropriately, accounting for both the methadone levels in your system and the long-term effects of opioid use on your body.

You might worry that disclosing your methadone use could lead to judgment or even refusal of care. However, in clinical practice, adjusting a sedation plan for patients on methadone is not complicated. If a provider isn’t willing to work with you on this, find someone who will. How to Choose a Provider for Dental Implants

Start with a general dentist if you want dental implants. Although some dentists refer patients to an oral surgeon or periodontist (dental implant specialist) for the implant surgery, treatment planning should begin with a general dentist experienced in implant dentistry.

Look for extensive training or credentials from dental implant education organizations, such as:

• International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI)
• American Board of Oral Implantology (ABOI)
• Advanced coursework or residencies focused on implants
