Good day Monroe! This beautiful day in Louisiana brings you another post from the Bayou Dental Group. Is you mouth starting to water just thinking about Thanksgiving? There’s all that delicious turkey to consume. Not just the turkey and stuffing you eat on Thanksgiving proper, but the turkey sandwiches you get to enjoy in the days which follow Thanksgiving. Plus mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and all the other delightful things you feat upon.
But toothaches and dental pain can keep you from enjoying all the spoils of your Thanksgiving meal. That’s where we come in at the Bayou Dental Group. In our last two posts, we’ve detailed how some of our exciting treatments can get your oral health up to speed for the Thanksgiving holiday. If you’re missing teeth, we can restore your self-confidence and chewing ability with dental implants. If you’re nervous about undergoing dental work, we can help you de-stress during the holidays with sedation dentistry. In our next post, we’ll tell you about how professional teeth whitening can brighten up your holiday photos.
But we realize that not all dental pain and toothaches are caused by missing teeth. In fact, most of them are caused by tooth decay. Tooth decay can ruin your holiday spirit by compromising your ability to eat your Thanksgiving favorites. Want to chew on a turkey leg? That’s simply out of the question if you’re suffering from a toothache caused by tooth decay.
Ironically, tooth decay is caused by the same activity it inhibits: chewing. Every bite of food you take leaves trace remnants of the food on your teeth. This food acts as a breeding ground for bacteria. Bacteria may build-up on your teeth and multiply into an acidic film of plaque. Plaque can erode away the enamel of your teeth, leaving you with cavities. Cavities are just about a fact of life; even with regular brushing, most adults are likely to suffer at least one of them in their lifetime.
But cavities don’t have to wreck your smile. At Bayou Dental Group in Monroe, LA, we offer several treatments which can restore your teeth and your ability to chew. For most cavities (depending on their size) we can remove the decay and then fill them with a tooth-colored filling. We don’t use old-fashioned metal fillings because they look bad and contain potentially harmful mercury.
Instead, we use a special composite material to fill your cavities called Esthet-X HD. This material is actually more durable than metal fillings; these fillings will last for decades because they bond directly to your teeth. In addition they look great, because they allow us to precisely color-match the filling to the rest of your teeth.
But sometimes, the structure of a tooth can be too compromised to be restored by a dental filling. Rather than extracting the tooth, we are generally able to restore it with a dental crown. First we remove the decay, then use a dental crowns to completely encompass your existing tooth. This shell replaces and covers the portion of your tooth which is visible above the gum line. A dental crown not only restores your tooth to a healthy appearance, it restores its chewing ability as well.
In the past, dental crowns would require several appointments. You would first have to be fitted for the crown, then the crown would be produced by an outside dental laboratory. At Bayou Dental Group in Monroe, LA, our office is equipped with state-of-the-art CEREC technology. This incredibly technology allows to take 3D imaging of your tooth, then feed it into a 3D printer which produces the crown.
With CEREC, dental crowns are now offered as a same-day appointment. These crowns are just as stable, functional, and beautiful as a traditional dental crown. The only real difference is that you save the time and expense necessitated by needing multiple appointments. Both our dental crowns and tooth-colored fillings look natural and lifelike; no one other than you and your dentist will know it’s not your natural tooth!
